In more severe cases it can cause numbness or tingling in the arms, as well as memory problems and difficulties with concentration.

Symptoms of whiplash usually show up within 24 hours of a traumatic event, and those symptoms usually last up to six weeks. In the most severe cases, patients have reported that their neck pain from whiplash lasted for years. To provide an accurate diagnosis, your Pain Specialist will talk to you about the event that caused your pain. They will then perform a thorough examination, and they may order imaging such as X-rays, computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Our goals when treating whiplash are to first control your pain, then to bring back your range of motion, and finally to get you back to normal daily activity. Your Pain Specialist may use a range of treatment options such as:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as Tylenol or ibuprofen)
  • Physical therapy
  • Cervical collars
  • Muscle-relaxing medications
